On Television By Ogden Dwight More premieres and -and they're only the beginning. Tuesday's debuts were both on NBC: "Fibber McGee and Molly" and "Laramie," revolving western. I was an act of courage, or desperation, for television to attempt a visual recreation of the saga of 79 Wistful Vista, chez McGee, which has ruly become a part of American culture since Jim and Marian Jordan originated Fibber and his friends on radio in 1935.
Not Funny They're still going strong in 1959 on "Monitor" every weekend, making it doubly difficult for TV's Bob Sweeney and Cathy Lewis to sell their own title roles to a wistful audience. Hal Peary alone from the original cast is along to offer what help the scripts will permit. The initial episode, borrowing heavily from a number of sources, was weak and not at all funny. Best laugh line was, "What happened to the man of stone? Well, I met a man with a chisel." New writers have been hired for future installments. Sweeney, whose best TV assignment was in "The Brothers" (how good that was by 1959 standards), will not make Fibber such a blusterer, nor will Miss Lewis be SO tart as Mrs.
Jordan, Maybe the mellowed characters will win acceptance; a lot depend on the appearance of Jack Kirkwood later. Barbera Beaird, 11, is an acceptable Teeny; Addison Richards is a poor counterfeit of acid old Doc Gamble (who was he on radio -Alan The laugh-track is insulting. "Revolving" Western The new western is described by its press agent as "revolving around life on the colorful frontier." One imagines it is colorful on color sets. Otherwise it is a cruel, revolving shame, especially for youngsters before bedtime. Why? One of the heroes new westerns can't have one hero this season, or two; heroes now come in threes, fours and fives, for protection is a 14-yearold boy (Robert Crawford, In a scene Tuesday night, Hoagy Carmichael (another hero) complained that someone took a swig of his whisky.
"Wasn't me," the knowing lad replied brightly. There was raw, graphic sadism as a villain compelled the third hero to knock out the fourth hero with three visibly fake haymakers; a guard was slain in cold blood, and a shoot-out laughable to any marksman sounded like the siege of Stalingrad. Since this series has not been sold, commercial message time was devoted (of all things!) to Dr. James B. Conant speaking for Better Schools, 9 E.
